Heggeman is the lead Vampire Elder called The Chosen, originating from the Netherlands. He is 1,010 years old and the leader of "The Dutch," pure-blood Dutch Vampires who live out amongst the Amish people of Pennsylvania. Every fifty years he and three other elders come to Boston to assess the situation and make changes if necessary. During the fifty year interregnum they hang from the rafters of a barn in cocoon-like shrouds. When the time comes to revisit Boston, they are transported in their coffins.
Background
On their last visit, in 1955, Heggeman and fellow Dutch Elder Soltice destroyed Boston's Vampire sect leader Carlo, for permitting James Bishop (one of Carlo's Vampire offspring) to have a love affair with a Human woman named Jane. (Relationships with Humans are considered blasphemous by the quasi-religious Elders, and are percieved by them as a betrayal of Vampire-kind.) After killing Carlo, The Dutch offered Bishop the leadership position, but demanded that he give up the woman in exchange. Bishop killed Jane (by strangulation) and The Dutch appointed Bishop Leader of the Boston sect.(Dog Eat Dog)
Season 1
During his latest inspection visit to Boston in 2011, Heggeman plotted with Marcus to replace the Boston Sect leader (Bishop) with Marcus. Marcus had betrayed Bishop by telling Heggeman of Bishop's plan to come out in the open and eventually enslave mankind. Heggeman demanded that Bishop come to Pennsylvania and reside in the Earth for no less than 50 years as punishment for potentially disturbing the balance between sects. He says that Vampires coming out to Humanity has been tried before, and has never worked. At a banquet, in which the main course was a compelled pregnant woman, Bishop refused Heggeman's demands and beheaded the other Elders after they started suffering the affects of Juniper, a slow acting herb that eventually produces temporary paralysis akin to rigor mortis. Heggeman escaped Bishop's massacre with Aidan and Rebecca's help (including Rebecca killing Marcus). It is assumed that Heggeman will report to the Council in Chicago and New York and inform them of Bishop's heresy. If Heggeman's parting words to Aidan and Rebecca are to be believed then a war is coming.(Going Dutch) Soon, after Bishop was killed by Aidan, Heggeman informs Aidan that "She" wants to see him and make him leader of the Boston Vampires.
Season 2
Heggerman is killed by Nora during her first transformation. Heggeman's death is not to be taken lightly. The remaining Dutch are already issuing their complaints to Mother over his disappearance. Heggeman enjoyed a respected and ancient position among the Vampire leadership. At least one Dutch vampire has stated his intention to take the issue up with Mother.
