Russell Tovey (born 14 November 1981 in Essex) is a British actor.

Tovey began his career as a child actor. He attended Shenfield High School where he was taught drama by Ralph Morse.

In 2004 he originated the role of Rudge in Alan Bennett's play The History Boys at the National Theatre as well as touring to Broadway, Sydney, Wellington and Hong Kong and playing the role on radio and film adaptations.[1][2][3][4]

In addition to his work on The History Boys, Tovey has played roles in the Royal National Theatre’s productions of His Dark Materials, His Girl Friday, Henry V and Howard Katz. [5][6][7][8]

In Spring 2007, Tovey had a recurring role in BBC Three comedy Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive, playing Rob's gay producer, Ben. In the same year he made guest appearances in BBC Three comedy Gavin & Stacey playing Budgie, a friend of Gavin and Smithy's, in two episodes, and then in the Doctor Who Christmas Special "Voyage of the Damned" and also in The End of Time: Part 2. Russell T Davies, the show's executive producer and lead writer, had suggested Tovey as a future replacement for David Tennant,[9] before it was announced that the Eleventh Doctor would be played by Matt Smith. Ironically, Tovey also plays a man tormented by memories of a hound in the "The Hounds of Baskerville" episode of BBC's Sherlock.

Tovey plays werewolf George, one of three supernatural housemates in the comedy drama Being Human. The pilot premièred on BBC Three on 18 February 2008.[10] A six-part series was commissioned with the first episode broadcast on 25 January 2009.[11] Tovey appeared on stage in The Sea at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in 2008, and also guest starred as the boyfriend of a drug dealer and suspected arms dealer in the fifth episode of the first series of Ashes to Ashes. In 2010 Tovey stars as the main character of Steve in the BBC Three show "Him & Her".
